Two Kinds of Being 1994-2000

"Two Kinds of Being" (1994-2000) formed the core of my PhD studio research project at the Royal College of Art where I explored the relationship between the two-dimensional lens-formed image and three-dimensional form. The research acted as a catalyst to the expression of my stated conceptual concerns. After extensively experimenting with both high tech. and traditional processes, methods and materials my interest centred on conventional photographic and life casting techniques. Using these simultaneously enabled me to create a new vocabulary to express my concepts. I wanted to instil one within the other - the image trapped within the form, the cast as the objective, outer appearance, the photograph the inner being, the body, the spirit and its' inseparable memories.
