Loves and Vanities 1986-91
The series "Loves and Vanities" (1986-1991) represents my first serious attempts to challenge the two-dimensional nature of the photographic image and liberate it into a three-dimensional aesthetic, using as subject-matter the preoccupations of youthful relationships, emotions and sexuality. It was while working on the "Loves and Vanities" series that I first began to identify a conflict between the formalistic and conceptual aspects of my work. Recognition of this conflict between ideas and methodology represented the culmination of this developmental period and provided the springboard for the "Two Kinds of Being" series.
